Challenging Behaviors I & II
This module requires two 90-minute sessions: one for theory of behavior change and the second for practical application.
Working with Challenging Behaviors I (behavior & theory)
Before a behavior is changed, it is important to understand what is going on. In this session, the typical sequence of behavioral problems is introduced: triggers of behavior, the behavior itself, and the aftermath or reactions to the behavior. By exploring this logical progression of the care recipient’s behavior, areas are identified where change is most likely to be successful. Caregivers are asked to share their specific examples so they learn how this sequence plays out in their everyday lives.
Working with Challenging Behaviors II (strategies to use)
In this session, theory is put into action. Caregivers are encouraged to share how they usually respond to challenging behaviors, to evaluate how effective these responses are, and to consider other ways to respond that may be more effective to reduce the stress of the situation. Strategies that other caregivers have found successful are also shared. Caregivers leave with a better understanding of their care recipient’s behaviors, where it is best to intervene, and strategies for responding more effectively, that can be tried at home.
